LICENSED AND ACCREDITED DRIVERS ED COURSE

Who Needs Driver's ED?

All drivers under the age of 18 in New Mexico must complete the Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) Process to earn their driver’s permit and eventually a full license. This process consists of three stages:

1. Instructional Permit
To qualify for an Instructional Permit, teens must complete a state-approved Driver’s Education course and pass the Motor Vehicle Knowledge Test. After receiving the permit, parents must provide at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice over a 6-month period, helping their teen develop safe and responsible driving habits. Teens are required to hold the permit for a minimum of 6 months before advancing to the next stage.

2. Provisional License
After completing Driver’s Education and passing a behind-the-wheel driving test, teens can apply for a Provisional License. This license must be held for one full year. During this time, teens are expected to maintain a clean driving record and continue demonstrating safe driving practices.

3. Full (Unrestricted) License
Once a teen has held a Provisional License for one year without violations, they become eligible to receive a Full, Unrestricted License — granting them full driving privileges in New Mexico.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE COURSE?

  1. Home-School Students
Students enrolled full-time in a home-school program are eligible.

  2. Rural Area Residents
Students who live more than 25 miles from the nearest driver education program qualify.

  3. School-Sponsored Events
Students who participate in school-sponsored sports, music programs, or other extracurriculars that conflict with in-person classes may be eligible.

  4. Employment Conflicts
Students with job schedules that overlap with available driver’s ed programs qualify.

  5. Extenuating Circumstances
Considered on a case-by-case basis. Valid reasons may include:

    • Medical or health-related issues

    • Student or parent/legal guardian employment conflicts

    Not considered valid reasons include:

    • Being on a waitlist for high school driver’s ed

    • Cost of private driver education

    • Personal preference

Note: Documentation from a physician, employer, or other qualified professional is required to verify any extenuating circumstance.
